- No part of Ireland suffered so much from the English as North Leitrim especially the area surrounding Manorhamilton. Sir Frederick Hamilton more aptly styled Sir Frederick, part of whose castle still stands, was probably the greatest ruffian of them all. His pastime was adorning the walls of his castle with the heads of all who opposed his way. But the gallant Breffni O'Rourke of Dromahaire finally fired the castle above his head, and though Hamilton escaped his power was broken and he became an evil of the past.
