His people claimed a large estate in North Leitrim and his methods are best described in the lines of a local poet, when he writes; "He did not kill like Frederick's troops,
But should the tenant fail
No power was to save him from
the work house or the gaol
But human nature can't endure -
The bullet of the brave
Sent his soul to judgement
And his body to the grave."
