    the peasant people at the hearth and when giving the history of the castle to youthful listeners, there appeared again in the person of Lord Leitrim one equal if not worse than Sir Frederick. His people claimed a large estate in North Leitrim and his methods are best described in the lines of a local poet, when he writes; "He did not kill like Frederick's troops,
    But should the tenant fail
    No power was to save him from
    the work house or the gaol
    But human nature can't endure -
    The bullet of the brave
    Sent his soul to judgement
    And his body to the grave."
    According to traditions Lord Leitrim was not the rightful heir
