    ruins of the old Hamilton castle, from which the town is named. Cows calves, bulls and, bullocks only are allowed up on the green. The horses are sold in Castle Street. the sheep are sold on the bridge, while pigs, hens, and other classes of poultry are sold on the streets.
    Toll is paid on cattle before they come into the town, to Joseph Bredin, Main St, Manorhamilton. It amounts to 6 d per head for cows and bullocks and threeprence on calves. "Luck Penny" is paid by the seller to the buyer. Two shillings is the average amount paid.
    A bargain is struck by clapping hands. Animals are marked with paint over the right leg. Special fairs are not held for special stock.
    The fair of Thur is held on the second Sunday of July. Thur is a high peak on the Lacoon Hills. It is an old custom, for all the lads and lassies, and all the men and women to assemble on the peak and dance and sing all the day.
