- This story was told by my grandfather, Patrick Devaney, of Greaghnafarna, Parish of Killinummery, Co. Leitrim, a few years ago. This is what he said. "Not far from my house there was an old bush in the middle of a man's field, and he thought the bush was greatly in his way, in ploughing or mowing. The man's name was, Paddy Kelly, Greaghnafarna, Parish of Killinummery, Co. Leitrim. He made manny an attempt to cut the bush, but he had not the courage. This day he said to himself that he would cut the bush, and he did so. First he dug a ring around the bush. Then he took an axe, and began to cut the roots, until he came to the principal one, and as soon as he had it cut, it sprung up into his face, and hit him on the forehead. Just then his head began to swell, and he had to be carried home. Every day he was getting worse, and was attended by several doctors, but they could do nothing for him.
