- (continued from previous page)no carts then, and very few horses. My Grandmother tells me that in olden times they had to carry the stones on their backs. They never used to pick level ground for road making, so they used to make them up hill and down hill straight ahead. It was on the animal's back they used to load the material the road making. They said that an animal with a load on its will travel faster on a hilly road than on level ground. There are a lot of roads in our district and very hilly ones too. About a hundred years ago there was a track of a new road cut out in our district. They had it diched in and pipes in to drain the water. Some thing turned up and it was not finished. It passes through my district but I do not know where it starts or where it ends.
