About a hundred years ago there was a hedge school in lower Dirreen.

    (continued from previous page)
It was held in an old house belonging to the teacher. The teacher's name was cap Sheahan. The children used never write with a pen or pencil but with a pencil made from slate. They used get them in the shops at three a penny. The children who were going to the school paid the teacher a shilling a month.
