- There is a memorial to the Manchester Martyrs in Listowel graveyard. It was erected in the year 1883. I consists of a Celtic Cross made of limestone and an iron railing is around it. On the day of unveiling scenes of great excitement occurred. A meeting was to be held and the Government proclaimed it. The police drew their batons and batoned the people. Many citizens were seriously injured. The people who were struck by the police were streaming with blood and roaring with pain. Many people were also knocked down and trampled on by the rushing people. They gathered together again and stones were thrown at the charging police.
