- There are not any old roads in the District. Roads were made in bad times. The payment the man got was 4d a day. The women were not working on the roads because the work was too hard, and they had not much food to eat.
There was a road leading to Gurteen from Clough. Any man that had a stack of oats in the haggard would not get work on the roads. They used to draw sand in baskets on their backs.- Collector
