    glass was used, instead a hole was made in the wall, and a bag filled with hay or straw was put in the hole to keep out the rain and wind when required. Thick blocks of wood about twice the width of the door were used as bolts or locks at night. There was a large long hole at the back of the door mid-way in the wall into which this block of wood fitted, and a similar hole at the other side. The block was drawn across the door at night from hole to hole and withdrawn during the day into the larger hole at the back of the door. Smaller bolts were used instead of latches during the day. Half-doors were also much in use long ago. In every house there was a spinning wheel, for making thread from the flax. There was a small quern kept near the fire for grinding corn.
