  1. One evening a shopkeeper was shutting his windows and he saw in through the window a worthless fellow taking half a pound of butter and hid it under his hat. When he was going home the shopkeeper said to him "come into the fire and warm yourself and he said "I won't bother" that that he would be shorting the way home for himself. But the man would not let him go. So at last he went in along with him but he did not want to go down to the fire. So the shopkeeper put down a good fire and made him come down near it. So then he got rum and gave it to him but the man did not want to take it. Then he brought him nearer to the fire and kept talking to him, Until at last the butter began melting and running down his face. When all the butter was melted on his face and clothes the shopkeeper said to him you can be going now because I have the worth of the half pound of butter go out of you.
