    Cloonteighban:
    Which means the meadow of the white fairy.
    Gallows Hill:
    Situated to the North East of the town. In 1798 after Ballinamuck Irish and French prisoners were brought to Carrick-on-Shannon, Military Barracks, where a certain percentage were to be executed. Death lotteries were then drawn, and those unfortunate enough to draw a ticket with "death" written on it were hanged on Gallows Hill. The trees from which they were hanged are still to be seen.
