- Hedge Schools.There was a hedge school situated about a quarter of a mile from my house. It last went out of action about seventy years ago. It was called Towneymore hedge school. There are out-houses built where the school stood, but the play ground is there still. The school was about 20 ft x 15 ft in size. There were about thirty pupils attending it, and they were always taught indoor. The master's name was Canning and he was a native of Towneymore. There was a night school carried on in a farmer's house in Derreen, and the master's name was Geelan. The pupils attending the day school paid the master a few shillings each quarter. Each one brought a sod or two of turf every morning. They were not taught many subjects, only Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. They were forbidden to speak Irish(continues on next page)
