he issued an authority to be presented in some shop in Mohill and that person (the invalid) got a weekly supply of nourishing food, at the Major's expense. This weekly supply in some areas consisted of tea, sugar, Port, Wine, Biscuits, Loaf of Bread.
He soon took a Census of his Estate and afterwards invited all his tenants into Mohill on a certain day. Each tenant in turn was admitted into his Office where he sat with his agent and Bailiff (Robert Navan Carrickvoher). He made some inquiries of each such as How many in Family? To each he gave some sort of a Ticket or voucher having marked on it: Something like this 1 Man's suit of Tweed 4 Boy's suits 1 woman's dress 4 girls' dresses. The tenant took this ticket to a Drapers shop in Mohill named "Strattons" and there he was supplied free with suits and dresses for himself and his family. In some cases he even gave bedclothes as least blankets.
He also made a practice that any farmer on his estate who built a new house of stone walls the height of ten or twelve feet he the Major would supply the Roof (timber and slates) free.
The other Landlord of the Neighbourhood James Lauder of Lauderdale, Ballinamore was a different type and not so kind.
