- The only Local Poet in this District that we ever heard of was Patrick Kane who was born in the townland of Tooma in the Parish of Augavas in the Co Leitrim about eighty years ago. When a boy he emigrated to the U.S.A. He came back on a holiday about fifty years ago, went again to U.S.A. settled in Chicago and died there only a few years ago.As his Poems are published in New York I think I should not give any of them here.
There were however three other Poets in this Parish - but NOT in this School district.Their names were Francis Gilfillan, Doogra, Corriga, Carrigallen
Joseph Gilfillan, Aughavas Carrigallen brother to Francis
Thomas Gilfillan, Aughavas, Carrigallen son to JosephEvery one of these made several Poems: but I regret that I cannot remember any of them complete. But I believe their Poems may be found in Collections from other schools of the Parish. These songs or some of them are still sung locally. There is a Portion of one made by Joseph Gilfillan Aughavas: It was a Lament for a Local Bonesetter Patarick O'Donohoe(continues on next page)- Collector
