- In olden times the way the people had for dyeing clothes was to scrape the moss off the old rocks. They had a short instrument for that purpose.
When they would have enough of moss gathered they would put a pot of water on the fire to heat and put moss and some white woollen clothes down together. They used to leave it down for half a day. Then when it would be boiled they would take it up and rinse the clothes in clean cold water.- Collector
