- (continued from previous page)only the space of a scraw they had for a window. There were no floors in those houses but clay floors.
The material they had for the fire long ago was fur and a little turf which they got on the mountains. They had no lamps to give light at night except candles which they made themselves. The material for the candles was fir and rushes. They used to split the fir in pieces about the thickness of a pencil and about a foot long. This done it was tied up to dry and after a few days it would show better light than the candles that are nowadays. The rush candle was made in the following way. First the rushes were peeled and the white of the rush was dipped in grease. Next they were left for the grease to freeze on them and they they showed good light.- Collector
