ago. Very often as much bread that would last for a week would be made together. Bread was often baked in an oven hanging over the fire and coals were put on the lid sometimes. Very often the lid was not put on at all and the cake was turned like on a griddle.
Griddle bread was always made. The red coals were drawn out on the side of the hearth. The griddle was placed on the coals of the hearth. The brand made out of a strong iron hoop with three legs under it to keep it raised off the coals. When the cake was half done it was turned up-side-down to bake the other side and teh cake was wheeled on the griddle to get the edges baked by the heat of the fire.
A slab-jack, slammy or turn-over was often made with a spoon and a bowl with sugar, butter, eggs, flour, soda, salt, and baked fast on a pan. It was eaten hot with butter. Children often made little cakes with dough on the warm hearth stone before, beside the fire.
