    hundred crowns if he had the bird. The man said he would soon bring him down, so he fitted his arrow and the bird fell into a bush. The jew saw he could get him easily put his purse in his pocket and crept into the bush for the bird. As soon as the country man got him in the bush he struck up a brisk tune at the first note of the fiddle the jew began to dance and at last he cried out "Mercy! Mercy!, 'Master what have I done to be treated like this. The countryman played on till at last he "bid" him a hundred crowns. The countryman took the money and walked on. The jew crept out half naked and went to the Duke and said that a man robbed him of all his money. The Duke sent out his Clerks. They did not go far until they overtook the countryman and brought him back before the Duke. He found him guilty he was led by a large following to the gallows. He asked the Duke for one request before he died. The Duke said he would grant anything but his life. I do not ask my life said the countryman
