- Long ago it was the custom in the Parish of Ahamlish, Barony of Carbury, Co Sligo to invite to the wedding every one who owned a horse and car.
A great number of people also came on horseback. There were no motor cars in those far off days.
As soon as the wedding party emerged from the Chapel, those who came on horseback mounted their horses and off they went as quickly as they could, striving to see which of them would reach the Bride's house first.
Whoever was the winner got a quart of whiskey.
It was believed that if a member of the Groom's family won, the Groom would have the most luck, but if the Bride's party won, the Bride would have the most luck.- Collector
