  2. In the bad old days when the Irish Catholics were being persecuted on account of their Religion, the English Government believed that if they left the "[mere?] Irish" without education of any kind it was only a matter of time until they were completely crushed.
    Schoolmasters were forbidden to teach school under severe penalties.
    But the English in their stupidity did not study the Irish temperament and placing a ban on education, a directly opposite result to what they intended took place. At this time, what are known
