The principal implements the smith uses are hammers, sledges, iron tongs, pinchers, rasps, or files and draw knives.
The smith uses the tongs to take the iron out of the fire, and he uses the hammers and sledges to beat the iron into shape. He leaves the iron on the anvil which he hammers it into shape. He uses a file or rasp and draw knife to shape the hooves of the animals which he shoes and uses the pincers to pull old worn shoes off animals hooves.
The principal forge work done in the open air is the shoeing of cart wheels. This work is usually done on the street in front of the forge.
