- There is one story connected with Lugnagall. Sir Frederick Hamilton was captain of Cromwell's soldiers and he had a castle at Manorhamilton. So he offered a great reward to any of his soldiers who brought him in a priest's head on his sword. They were plundering and destroying the church and brought the Priest's robes with them. They were a taking a robe each home from Sligo and they crossed the mountain. They met with an old bard called Murlagh mac Sharry and they asked the way home. He guided them until he let them down on the rock at Lugnagall, which the old people ever after called the Protestant Fall.
