- (continued from previous page)The houses were lighted at night by rush candles filled into a sconce in the wall. Turf was the chief fuel used. It was called "hand-turf". Barefooted the men went to the bog and dug it up and tramped it and then made it into shape with their hands. They then arranged the sods or "turves" in rows to dry.
