  1. Hedge Schools
The first Natl School in this district was opened in 1861.
There appears to have been just one of the hedge schools left and it survived some little time after the opening of the Natl shool
The school was run by a man named James Heally but as to his qualifications and how acquired nothing appears to be known.
More often than not he was absent from the school following up his the calling that of baliff but in his absence the discipline of the school was in the hands of his wife.
There appears to be a series of reader known as 'Reading made easy' Spelling was learned from seperate books 'Single + double Universal' (spelling book). There appears to have been little facilities for learning to write as in most cases the paper rested on the knee of the [onle?] and the pen was "quill". Nearly all the work was done in the open air owing to lack of light and ventilation.
