- No old crafts are carried on in this locality at present except thatching and the making of hay ropes. The latter are used for tying "hand stakings" and cocks of hay in the hayfields. A sally rod is bent slightly and the point fastened to the main stem thus
{illustration} A piece of hay is twisted round this bend, the handle is turned while the hay is kept in twist by a second person. This continues until a length is acquired. Huge balls of this rope are in readiness for use next day.
