The drills are made a foot apart with a double plough. In the shoughs between the drills they put stable manure.
Then some of the young children round about will help to plant the potatoes. The potatoes are cut into small pieces called splits. The split must have at least two eyes so that if one eye failed to grow the other eye would have a chance to grow.
They are covered with clay with a double plough; this work is called 'closing'.
The potatoes that they usually grow in this district are namely, Arran-victor, Arran Banner and Kerr-pink.
