- The kind of houses that resisted in former times were built with stone and mud. They were covered with rushes or straw tied down with straw ropes. The fire place was in the gable wall built up with bare stone, and a round hole in the roof to let out the smoke. Some of the houses had no windows only a small hole, there used to be a bed in the kitchen and it was called a poach.
