- (continued from previous page)About fifty years ago there was a hedge school in Lackagh. An old man named Michael Mulligan was the teacher there. All the children of the locality attended this school for a few hours’ daily. They sat under a thick hedge on a stone slates on and left their states on the back of a ditch. In wet weather they threw a few lags of clothes on them to provide shelter.
The subjects they learned were the alphabet, prayers, spellings, writing and reading. The teacher was very poorly paid each child giving him a halfpenny each week. He never had to use a cane as the children were very anxious to learn.- Collector
