- I make toys out of daub. I go out into the field. I take a spade with me. I dig a deep hole in the field. There I find the daub. I get a shovel and bring in some of the daub. I take a small bit of the daub and I roll it in-to a round shape the size of an ordinary toy. Then I put it in the ashes until it gets hard. I take it out and I dip it in the paint. Sometimes the toys are easy broken

- One evening I went out to the garden and pulled a turnip. My father said he would make a ghost out of it. I was very glad. He got a sharp knife, and pared the turnip round. He left the turnip boast inside. He cut a place in it for two eyes. and a mouth. He asked me to get a stick, and a candle. I did so. It was now dark. He went out on the road, and put the turnip standing on the fence. He lit the candle with a match, and stuck it up on the turnip. James Byrne was frightened with it that night.
