- There was once a witch who was very wise, On every may day she went to a corner of a field. Here she was supposed to enchant something. The people were all afraid of her, and wanted to kill her. The witch could not be caught only with a black hound. He let off the hound after the witch. They went out across ditches and hedges and the man ran after them until they went out of sight. At last he caught sight of them going up a mountain. He followed them. When he came up to the foot of the mountain, he saw them go into a little house. He went up and into the house, when he looked around he saw the witch dead, but there was no sight of the hound. The man searched and looked, still there was no hound. The people were glad the witch was killed and never saw the hound. Some time afterwards he got a crock of gold in the house. Some of the people said the witch must have caused some magic on the hound
