- In the vicinity of Tralee situated in the Old Golf links about half a mile from the town there is a fort called Payne's Fort. During the National Movement this fort was a rendering of the I.R.A. One night at midnight a party of men left Oakpark with guns and ammunition for the fort where they were to meet other members of the Volunteers.After waiting some time they saw a group of men who were in military order in the middle of the fort. The proceeded towards them thinging they were the men for whom they were waiting. The officer in command said "It is about time for ye to come" and no sooner had he said it when the group got the order "Quick March" and shortly afterward "Right Incline". They then proceeded towards the ditch, climbed it and disappeared. Sometime before that happening soldiers were supposed to have been shot at the same fort. And also a British subject named Major Mc Henna was shot on the old Golf(continues on next page)
