  1. In olden times people made matches for their sons and daughters.
    When a man was about to give up his place to his son, he would send some man-friend to a neighbours house, who would have a marriageable daughter with what the called an "account" of a match.
    The girl should have a certain amount of money which was called a fortune. If she had not this, the other party would send word to somebody else, who would be likely to have the moeny. If that was the case the girls father and some firends would go to the boys house, to look over things, and if all was well, they would appoint a day for the boy and girl to meet, and see if they would like each other. If they did, then a day would be appointed to pay the money, after which the wedding day was fixed. The marriage took place in
