    of the Williamite soldiers in a most tyrannical manner towards the people. Having heard of the fate of Griffin he fled the country and died abroad. But his evil genius haunted the house he once occupied and which passed into the possession of a farmer. He employed workmen on the land attached to the house. They slept upstairs. One night they heard a horseman gallop in the garden outside, they looked out and recognised Cronin, to their horror he rode into the kitchen. They returned to bed and covered themselves under the bed clothes. Cronin rode up the stairs and into the room. The horse bit two of the workmen in the bed and so put them to death. The third was saved and as it was said because he wore a Scapular of the Virgin. The other two had no scapular.
    Cronin came the second time and other workmen slept in the same room. They heard him and saw him again and called and hooted after him but he did not enter the house. From the window of their room they waved victoriously a crucifix towards him but he fled away on his white horse like a "guilty thing upon a
