In the time of Cú Culainn, of Connor Mac Nessa, of the Crucifixion, there lived a strong and mighty chieftain at a place called Derrymore West. He was on intimate terms with Cu Culain who often visited him in his castle at Derrymore. This powerful chieftain built himself two castles one at the bottom of the mountain near the road-side, the other on the top of the mountain. In the castle near road side he entertained his guests and housed ordinary chattels, but in the castle on the mountain top he stored valuables of all kinds and detained prisoners.
Curac Mac Derry, for this was the name of this powerful Kerry chieftain, and Cu Culain planned a raiding expedition to the Isle of Man. They brought away with them a beautiful young girl named Blannaig. They both loved Blannaig and they fought for her possession. Curac Mac Doire won the contest and while Cu Culain was unconscious from a blow received in the fight, Curac Mac Derry cut his hair. This was a most disgraceful defeat for a warrior in those times and Cu Culain(continues on next page)- Collector
