- William Rooney of Ballydwyer Bally McElligott born about the year 1876 at Ballydwyer was one of the parishes best runners winning several prizes in Tralee and Castleisland and other local sports meetings. In the 220 yds he specialised.
When a young man, he left Ireland for the land of the Stars and Stripes where he was again heard of in the athletic arena. In a challenge with negro in the Chicago Park, Rooney was victorious and won a substantial sum of money. The negro was so enraged at his defeat that he attempted to stab Rooney when the race was over, but was prevented by the Irish clement in Chicago.
Jack Hussey of Edenburn ran a mile in about 10 minutes. He also ran 120 yards in three minutes in Dublin. He was also the champion of all Ireland, he was often challenged but he always won. - William Tangney of Ashill, about 80 years ago each Sunday coming home from mass used jump the railway gates without putting a hand on them.
