- It was Richard O'Leary of Knockanearabaill who broke down the turnpike at Ardnanaonig. Then the other turnpikes in the district soon followed. There was one day every year when the people could go past these turnpikes without paying toll.
On that day O'Leary rode back and broke and scattered the gates at the turnpike so that on the following day there was no means of stopping the people to make them pay tolls.
