of room for the people to sleep and the old people had to sleep in a settle bed in the corner of the kitchen beside the fire and there used to be a red curtain cutting off the bed from the rest of the (of the) kitchen. A barrel or a box was put in the roof in place of a chimney. Clay floors were very common in this district. The hens used to be kept (to be) in the kitchen on a roots over the door.
