On that night a wedding feast is held in the home of the groom. There is a large gathering of invited friends there. Some people who would not be asked would supply themselves with bottles and horns and go to a hill not far away from the house and “kettle” the married couple. There is drink and eatables at the feast.
It was a custom long ago to break a cake of oaten bread on the head of the bride as she entered the house on the night of her wedding, that was said to bring her plenty during her life.
Another old custom was, on on the night of the wedding. The bride was met at the door by the old people and given the churndash and the tongs to show that she was the new mistress there.
My father told me he was at a wedding and “straw” boys came to it. They were dressed up in straw like a stack, they danced and sang and behaved well; the people of the house gave(continues on next page)- Collector
