- In the parish of Mahercloone there lived a man named Peter Smith who had a fort in one of his fields. One Spring evening he had almost finished ploughing his field with a fine pair of horses when a briar struck one of the horses and he fell dead on the ground. The man was very much annoyed at the loss of his horse and he believed it was the fairies who killed it. He gathered together a number of his neighbours. They helped Peter to loosen the other horse. The neighbours made a hole in which to bury the horse. Then they proceeded to pull the horse from the plough.
