    the tenant who paid his rent last got the official receipt. If a farmer failed to pay the men who guaranteed the rent was called on to pay, if not, his cattle were seized.
    A story is told that on one occasion the landlord invited his tenants to a feast. the tenants wishing to go as well dressed as possible, in some cases, borrowed clothing for the occasion. When Lady Dartrey saw them she exclaimed that they were all better dressed than the earl, and it was decided to raize their rents.
