- The way you make a top is to get a big spool and to cut it through the middle. Then pare it until it is conical in shape. Then get a stick and sharp one end of it and put it down through the hole in the half spool and this makes an excellent top.
To make a buzzer you get a piece of a flat light board and cut it any shape or size you wish. Warm a knitting needle in the fire and bore two small holes in the centre and get a piece of a cord and put it through the holes. To make it buzz hold the double cord in each hand with the buzzer in the middle. Hold the left hand firm, and turn the cord quickly in the right hand. This twists the cord. Still holding the left hand firm begin drawing and pulling the right hand out and in towards the left. This makes a very pleasant buzzing sound which can be kept up for a long as you like. We sometimes hold buzzing competitions with other boys, to see who can keep the buzzer going longest.
