When an animal is sold luck - money is given to the buyer. This is commonly called a "luck - penny". There is no set calculation for the giving of this.
When a bargain is made the buyer and seller show their agreement by striking hands. When an animal is sold to an official cattle - dealer it is marked with a red - coloured object called a "keel," but when an animal is sold to a neighbour or farmer it is not marked at all.
When an animal has been sold the halter is usually given away, but occasionally it is retained. The chief fairs for horses are Clones, Cavan, and Ballybay. Once a month, in nearly every town, there is a market held for the sale of pigs.
