- Heard by teacher from various people in school district. 1 Good corn grows long: said of young people who are growing rather tall for their age.
2 A bad weed grows fast - compare with no 1. A parent will often make use of this expression when speaking of a son or daughter who is growing rather tall and the listener will reply by no 1 above.
3 Fishing for compliments. when a person dispraises himself or his belongings in some way he is said to be "fishing for compliments" ie expecting to hear praise from those he is speaking to.
4 As the old cock crows the young one learns = what the child sees done is what the child will do.
5 You cannot breed a pigeon from a magpie = Like father like son. Said of the wild son of a wild father.
6 Sure he is somebody's rearing Said in pity of a poor unfortunate tramp or prisoner who has no friends.
7. Your son is your son till he takes a wife
Your daughter is your daughter all her life.
8 Good looks don't make the pot boil: usually said of a man who marries a good looking but thriftless woman.
9 good goods go into small bounds said of a small person.
