- Some of the old people have stories about the Great Famine 1846 - '47. It affected the district very much. The year before the famine there was great abundance of everything. But the next year there was a famine. The potato crop failed. It was in the ground that the potatoes decayed. "Yellow meal" was the only food the people could get. There were two fields sold in Coolbawn for a bag of meal.
Some man in this district went to the priest for food. But the priest had none left. He gave the man a chair which was the last thing in the house, to sell and get a bag of(continues on next page)- Collector
