- There have been at least 18 rural or local forges or smiths shops in the parish during the past fifty years.
A few of the Smiths of the present time are descendants of those who lived during the Seventies and during the previous years of the last century.
The nearest smith now to Emyvale School is known as John Mc Carron of Gortaclieve. His late father, Peter Mc Carron and his uncle John Mc Carron, have been the foremost smiths in the parish during the last forty years of the pat century.
This man John Mc Carron has been living in the old homestead during the pat 35 years. In the year 1879 his parent were evicted from their holding and the farmhouse and forges were demolished by the Crow [Ban?] Brigade. For a long number of years the farm lay derelict and his people were tossed about the country, residing in several localities till, finally, this present John Mc Carron and his mother and sisters were re-instated in their old home under a Land act brought into operation by a Conservative chief secretary for Ireland namely -(continues on next page)
