    none and they would steal some on their way to school. The master was a hard determined teacher. The school commenced at eleven o'clock and they got half an hour for recreation and were allowed to return home at four o' clock. Only certain subjects were taught in the school such as counting and Irish. Writing and reading were neglected simply because the master did not comprehend the English language and because his euphuism was simple. The master was not an expert teacher. His average of pupils consisted of thirty with no avidity for learning. Mr Waterson was a fastidious teacher and had great doubts whether his pupils would be successful.
