Jim made a nice nest of wool, and sewed it on to his shirt near his bosom. He held them there until the birds came out. John Hawks lent him a lark and she acted as a foster mother for the canaries. They were the first canaries that was hatched in Kenmare. They were hatched by Jim himself and that is how he got the nickname as Jim the cock.
