- The wild animals of this locality are the fox, the hare, the rabbit, the badger, the hedge-hog, the weasel, the rat, the mouse, the otter and shrew.The fox is said to be the most cunning and intelligent of animals. It makes its den under ground and in a hole dug by himself under a tree or in a big 'cladarach' of stones. The fox does no harm to sheep and lambs and poultry near his own den unless dire necessity compels him to do so. A native of Dreenaclarif John Shea took his dogs into a foxes den and killed two young cubs, In less than a fortnight the poor man's flock of hens and ducks had disappeared. This proves that the fox had his own revenge. The skin is very valuable and the tongue is used for drawing poison out of wounds.The hedge-hog lives also underground. He is(continues on next page)
