- Skelligs Rock (South-West Kerry)The Skellig Rock, off the mainland in South-West Kerry is famed as being the place from which St Brendan, the navigator, sailed when he discovered the great continent of America. At the summit of the Rock there is the ruins of a Monastery. Many people start out to make a Pilgrimage to the ruins of the Monastery but very few reach the ruins – as it takes an iron nerve to make the ascent. The Skellig Rock is also the place where all eligible young men and women who drew blanks during Shrove go to find consolation. All night long dozens of both sexes may be met on the road to Skelligs.
