    The "Run away was resorted to by the young couple who were to marry when they wanted to force the hand of their parents who would not permit the marriage otherwise. For instance if a girl who had a big fortune was courted by a young man who had only a small farm, The girls father would not allow his daughter to marry such man. Then the young couple accompanied by a near relation of the girls went off to a friends house and stayed there and were said to have run "away." When the girls father got over his anger he sent for his daughter and gave her what "dowry" he had for her and then the marriage took place. I know a man who never spoke to his daughter after she ran away although she lived
